Two-Match Guarantee Brackets

Everyone wrestles at least twice. Lose your first match and you get a guaranteed second match. Semifinal losers wrestle for 3rd. Every match counts toward team scores.

How it works in a 16-wrestler bracket

The rule is simple: lose with fewer than two matches and you get one more. Otherwise you're done — unless you lost in the semifinals.

  1. Loses in the first round

Wrestles one guaranteed second match, then is done for the day.

    2 matches
  2. Wins the first round, then loses in the quarterfinals

Done for the day — they already have their two matches.

    2 matches
  3. Has a first-round bye, then loses in the quarterfinals

Gets a guaranteed second match, because the bye didn't count.

    2 matches
  4. Loses in the semifinals

Wrestles the other semifinal loser for 3rd and 4th place. There are no wrestlebacks.

Odd numbers and byes, handled

Automatic pairing

Wrestlers waiting for their second match are paired with each other as soon as nobody else can join them.

One-click helper

If one wrestler is left over, BracketBoard flags them and the director picks a helper from the same bracket.

Tiny weight classes

Three wrestlers run as a round robin; two wrestle a best of 3. Everyone still gets two matches.

Frequently asked questions

What is a two-match guarantee bracket?
A single-elimination bracket where every wrestler is guaranteed at least two matches. Anyone who loses their first match gets a guaranteed second match. The two semifinal losers wrestle each other for 3rd, so there are no wrestlebacks for a true third. It's common at junior varsity and youth events, where the goal is mat time for everyone.
What happens to a wrestler with a bye?
A bye doesn't count as a match. If a wrestler gets a first-round bye and then loses their first real match, they get a guaranteed second match just like a first-round loser would.
What if there's an odd number of wrestlers needing a second match?
BracketBoard pairs wrestlers waiting for their second match with each other automatically. If one is left over, the director picks a helper from the same bracket — someone who's finished in the championship bracket — and the app adds the match. That wrestler may end up with a third match, which is how these events usually handle it.
What about a weight class with only 2 or 3 wrestlers?
A bracket can't guarantee two matches to fewer than four wrestlers, so BracketBoard runs 3 wrestlers as a round robin (each wrestles twice) and 2 wrestlers as a best of 3. The third match only happens if they split the first two.
Do the guaranteed matches count toward team scores?
Yes. Every match wrestled counts: championship matches, guaranteed matches and the 3rd-place match. Places 1st through 4th earn placement points.
Does it work for tennis and pickleball?
Yes. The same format is available for pickleball and tennis events: everyone plays at least twice, first-match losers get a guaranteed second match, and the semifinal losers play for 3rd.
How much does it cost?
Standard events are free, in any format. You only pay if the event runs more weight classes than your ruleset's standard or a bracket larger than 16 wrestlers — then it's $2 per bracket, one time.
